Here are Jim's thoughts on the magic Mata Hari P.A. system.

In most of his own words

Stage 1

  • 100 watts (RMS) 4 channel + 1 aux-out, Audico amplifier.
  • 8 x 12" twin cone 'Rola' speakers. Fitted in a 2 x 6' cabinets with 4 speakers wired in series/parallel. (I think ...... from a poor memory) { er, shouldn't that be series, or parallel, james ? R }
  • 2 x 811B Altec Lansing 80 watt top-end horns.

Stage 2

This is what was added to stage 1

  • 300 watt (RMS) Audico master slave unit. Total output with stage 1 amplifier was approximately 200 watt per channel.
  • 2 x 15" 150 watt Altec Lansing sub-woofers, rear mounted in 5' x 3' x 3' scoop bins. (1 in each)
  • 2 x 120 watt Altec Lansing top-end horns.

This amp was being built for Armageddon but we fucking took it 'cause the "ole' Rippoff", (Brian Rippon), was taking to long to finish ours. Fuck him and fuck them I believe was the catch cry! Smily

Use of the system varied depending on the size of the auditorium

Large gigs dictated all speakers faced the audience with the smaller columns being used as a mid-range factor, along with top-end horns and sub-woofer bass bins.

At medium to small gigs the columns and 811B horns were usually made up to be used as a fold back system.
All these mixes had some variation at times, but whatever the variation, or wherever the gig it used to 'fucking crank'.

Smokin'.

The system and the mix was much admired far and wide.

Jim

Footnote:

Another reason for the good sound was the choice of quality Beyer microphones.

Road

While on the topic of musical equipment here is a bit of a break down of the instrument amplifiers.

The bass, lead and rhythm guitars all used 100 watt Wasp amplifier heads, and two boxes with two (??) speakers in each. These were acquired to replace the original amplifiers the boys had, that were starting to sound a bit tired. From memory I think they were a couple of Lennards and a Fender.

Guitar-wise Dave and Crabs updated to Gibson SG's and Appy got a Fender Precission bass. Lee came with a Fender bass of some kind.
