Tributes - Stories

Before I was encouraged to join a band by Kevin Wyatt and we eventually played together in the Marshall Brothers I was a consummate Jim Stanes and Mata Hari fan. We used to drive up to Salamander Bay pub every Sunday afternoon to listen to Mata Hari play … the highlight of the week. Jim was a huge presence on stage and would belt out songs week in week out as one of the best lead singers around at that time. He was awesome!

The defining feature of his character was his friendly approachability. He was always a true gentleman and even spoke to the likes of myself and my drunken mates whenever he passed our table. When I started singing with bands he was always nothing but extremely supportive and complimentary. He was generous to a fault when it came to encouragement. He also remained the same throughout his life.

We only got back in touch several years ago and Jim hadn’t changed at all … still the same friendly fella.

His passing is not only a loss to the music world but a loss to the world of great human beings.

Rest in peace my old friend.

Chris Brown,
Formerly of the Marshall Brothers.
